655 New York Avenue featured in ArchitectureDC
The Summer 2021 issue of ArchitectureDC includes a feature article on 655 New York Avenue, NW in its review of forward-looking workplaces. The LEED Gold project integrates 19 historic buildings with 11 stories of new construction. Author Ronald O’Rourke notes that “SBA’s design for the project didn’t just save those buildings’ facades—in most cases, their entire masonry shells were preserved” and remarks on how the design combines “angular, straight-sided elements with boldly curving forms.” The author also questions how future office design may be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior Principal Patrick Burkhart, AIA remarked that “a few broad themes appear to be evolving, including programming and spatial design that fosters social interaction both physically and electronically in a safer environment; a heightened importance of daylight, views, and ventilation; and the provision of a variety of interior and exterior office environments, including ample outdoor spaces suitable to a climate like ours.”

Shalom Baranes Quoted in WBJ Story on Amazon’s HQ2 Tower Design
Shalom Baranes, FAIA discussed the impact of the double-helix design proposed for Amazon’s second headquarters in Arlington, VA with The Washington Business Journal (WBJ). He considers the concept “a fabulous educational opportunity to show the world what a double-helix shape is” and noted that while other double-helix structures exist locally, their locations inside of parking garages do not “contribute to people's understanding of science. But suddenly, you have this double-helix, 300 feet tall, emerging from the ground. You can't ignore that anymore.” Read the full story at https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2021/02/03/architects-react-to-amazon-helix.html.
