
Groundbreaking: USCIS
Officials with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the General Services Administration (GSA) broke ground on the future USCIS headquarters in Camp Springs, MD. The 575,000 sf building will unite more than 3,000 employees currently working in multiple locations across the region.

1000 South Capitol Street, SE Receives BZA Approvals
The DC Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) granted an extension of the PUD for 1000 South Capitol Street, SE and approved an application to permit retail/service use on the ground floor; reconfigure the ground floor, parking, loading, bicycle parking, and the north penthouse enclosure; permit the addition of balconies to certain units; and modify the range of dwelling units permitted in the proposed multi-family apartment building.

The Apartments at CityCenterDC Receive Award for Merit in Architecture from AIA|DC
The jury of the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC) 2017 Design Awards selected The Apartments at CityCenterDC for a Merit in Architecture award. They viewed the project as a “recalibrated approach to the housing model,” noting the “fresh attitude for residential” and the “innovative exterior wall system” design, which uses vertical terra cotta panels to create walls and balcony screens.

McMillan Campus for Advancement of Health and Wellness Receives Second PUD Approval
The DC Zoning Commission (ZC) reaffirmed its approval of the McMillan Campus for Advancement of Health and Wellness, creating a path for the 25-acre development to move forward after its initial ZC approval was vacated by the DC Court of Appeals. Shalom Baranes Associates is designing two medical office buildings for the project that will include 1,500,000 sf of clinical, research, administrative, and ancillary medical space and below-grade parking.

1300 4th Street, NE Receives Approval of Second Stage PUD from DC Zoning Commission
The DC Zoning Commission (ZC) approved final action in the second stage Planned Unit Development (PUD) application for 1300 4th Street, NE. The 10-story residential building will maximize retail space at the street level and offer approximately 135 units – including penthouse level residences – and rooftop amenity spaces. The first stage PUD granted approval of the residential building under construction on the property’s south parcel at 1270 4th Street, NE. 1300 4th Street, NE is currently in design development.

1000 F Street, NW featured in the Fall 2017 Issue of ArchitectureDC

DC Zoning Commission Approves Final Action on 1336 8th Street, NW
The consolidated Planned Unit Development (PUD) and related map amendment for a new multi-family residential project at 1336 8th Street, NW was approved by the DC Zoning Commission (ZC). The 85-unit development in Shaw will include five townhomes and 26 affordable housing units.

OGB/CFA Approve Demolition Permit for 3000 M Street, NW
Progress on 3000 M Street, NW continues as the Old Georgetown Board (OGB) and Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) approved issuance of a permit to demolish the non-contributing two-story M Street wing and erect a new two-story structure; re-clad and glaze the seven-story structure to the south; and construct a new two-story addition at the existing driveway on 30th Street. Construction is scheduled to be complete in the third quarter of 2019.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Surgical Pavilion Receives Zoning Commission Approval
The DC Zoning Commission (ZC) granted special exception approval for the further processing of the 2017-2036 Georgetown University Campus Plan, an important step in moving the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Surgical Pavilion project forward. The construction document phase is anticipated to commence in January 2018.

The Apartments at CityCenterDC Receive Residential Design Award from Washingtonian Magazine
The Apartments at CityCenterDC earned recognition in the Multi-Family Housing category as part of Washingtonian Magazine’s annual Residential Design Awards. The program, held in partnership by the magazine and the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC), recognizes distinctive residential projects on the basis of excellence in total design including aesthetics, programmatic response, and sustainability. Out of 126 entries, 12 projects were selected for an award. Milken Museum and Conference Center Receives BZA Approvals
The Milken Foundation earned variances and special exception approval from the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) to allow an addition to 1503-1505 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW that will accommodate a museum, offices, and conference space. The Milken Museum and Conference Center project site encompasses three properties at 1501 and 1503-1505 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and 730 15th Street, NW.

1336 8th Street, NW and Channing E. Phillips Homes Featured in Spring 2017 Issue of ArchitectureDC
The Spring 2017 issue of ArchitectureDC included a special feature on Washington, DC's Shaw neighborhood, which the magazine describes as “experiencing a surge in development that is changing the area's architectural texture and demographic profile.” Two SBA projects were featured – 1336 8th Street, NW and Channing E. Phillips Homes. BZA Grants Variance and Special Exception Relief for 699 14th Street, NW
699 14th Street, NW was granted a variance from the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) to allow a habitable penthouse and special exception relief under the rear yard requirements to improve usability of and access to loading/delivery spaces. The renovation of the National Register-listed building and design of a new 11-story addition will create a trophy-class office development just blocks from the White House.
